Laos, officially known as “The Lao People’s Democratic Republic,” is the only landlocked nation in Southeast Asia and is the most mountainous in the region. It is an ideal destination for motorcycle adventures.
During the Vietnam War, more bombs were dropped on Laos than on Germany and Japan combined during World War II, making it, per capita, the most heavily bombed country in history. Today, it remains one of the poorest countries in Asia and is classified as ‘third world’. As a one-party communist state, the hammer and sickle flag is visible throughout the country. Riding through Laos offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The people are always smiling and friendly, with children waving as we pass through villages, and adults who may be shy but are always welcoming.
Given its third-world status, the roads in Laos can be unpredictable. We’ll encounter some excellent tarmac and some that are less so, and you’ll learn to navigate more than a few potholes along the way! One thing is certain: you’ll be treated to some of the most breathtaking mountain views, beautiful river valleys, and sights you’ve ever experienced on a motorcycle….

Itinerary
Day 1: Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong | The Warm-Up
Kick off at 9:00 AM as we fire up the Suzuki V-Strom 650s. We’ll start with an easy highway stretch to get you dialed into the bike’s balance and low-end torque. Once the city fades, the elevation rises. While today features high-speed dual carriageways, this is Thailand—even the main roads carve through mountains with sweeping, high-speed banked curves. We’ll make a pit stop at the surreal White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) before ending the day on the banks of the mighty Mekong, staring across the water at Laos.
Day 2: Chiang Khong to Boten | Into the Unknown
We hit the Friendship Bridge at 8:00 AM. While our team handles the logistical headache of Laos border bureaucracy, you can prep for the transition to the "Right Side" of the road. Once across the Mekong, the landscape shifts instantly: remote tribal villages and emerald rice paddies give way to the Luang Namtha National Park. This is pure ridgeline riding—tight hairpins and staggering drop-offs. We finish in Boten, a bizarre, neon-lit frontier town on the Chinese border with a gritty "Wild West" history and a vibe unlike anywhere else on earth.
Day 3: Boten to Nam Kat Yorla Pa | The Jungle Jewel
Wheels up at 7:30 AM for a technical morning blast. The roads here are narrow, nimble, and relentlessly twisty—true V-Strom territory. Our destination is the Nam Kat Yorla Pa, arguably the most luxurious nature resort in Southeast Asia. We arrive early, giving you the afternoon to choose your own adventure: high-speed jungle ziplining, trekking to hidden waterfalls, or simply nursing a cold Beerlao by the infinity pool.
Day 4: Nam Kat Yorla Pa to Luang Prabang | Valleys & Vistas
A relaxed 9:30 AM departure takes us through the regional hub of Oudom Xai. From there, we scale high mountain passes before a dramatic descent into the River Ou Valley. We’ll trace the river’s edge on winding scenic blacktop until we reach the UNESCO crown jewel: Luang Prabang. This city is a stunning blend of French colonial elegance and Buddhist tradition. Our hotel is heart-of-the-action, walking distance to the vibrant night markets and riverfront bars.
Day 5: Luang Prabang | Rest & Recharge
Take a break from the saddle to explore. Dive into the tiered, turquoise limestone pools of the Kuang Si Waterfalls, visit the local Sun Bear sanctuary, or take a slow-boat sunset cruise on the Mekong. This is your day to soak in the atmosphere of the world’s most charming riverside city.
Day 6: Luang Prabang to Phonsavan | The Mystery of the Jars
We head east into the rugged highlands. The destination is Phonsavan, home to the mysterious "Plain of Jars." This area holds a heavy history; it’s the most bombed place on the planet. You’ll see local architecture supported by massive US bomb casings and massive craters in the middle of rice fields. It’s a sobering, fascinating, and deeply evocative ride through living history.
Day 7: Phonsavan to Vang Vieng | The Kasi Pass
Today is for the scenery junkies. We traverse the highest mountain pass of the tour, offering panoramic views that will leave you breathless. After lunch, we drop into the Kasi Valley, where the road is flanked by towering limestone karsts that look like they’ve been pulled from a King Kong movie. We roll into Vang Vieng, a town nestled in a landscape of jagged peaks and winding rivers.
Day 8: Vang Vieng to Vientiane | The Capital Run
Enjoy a late 11:00 AM start—perfect for an optional sunrise hot air balloon ride over the karst peaks. The ride today is a smooth, rhythmic cruise skirting the Nam Ngum reservoir before descending into the Mekong Valley. We’ll end the day in Vientiane, the low-key capital of Laos, for a night of world-class French-Lao cuisine and hidden riverside nightlife.
Day 9: Vientiane to Dansai | The Mekong Twist
Prepare for a mind-blowing 120km stretch following the Mekong’s edge. This is legendary riding: fresh, "shiny" tarmac through incredible mountain passes with constant views of the river. After a riverside lunch, we cross back into Thailand. Our final stretch is a short, punchy ride to the Phu Pha Nam Resort, a grand, eccentric mountain retreat.
Day 10: Dansai to Nan
Get ready and have an extra cup of coffee in the morning as we’ll conquer four National Parks in a single day, riding the most remote, traffic-free mountain roads in Thailand. Nan is a lovely provincial capital offering nice lodgings, ancient Buddhist temples and an unforgettable insight into unseen Thailand, far from tourist crowds.
Day 11: Nan to Chiang Mai via Phayao | The Grand Finale
The final leg is a marathon of curves. Leaving the provincial capital of Nan, we’ll hit the "race track" roads toward Phayao for a final lakeside lunch. The tour finishes with 160km of glorious, high-speed sweepers as we push back into Chiang Mai. We’ll be back by 4:00 PM—exhausted, exhilarated, and ready for the first "welcome home" beer.
