Nan Loop
Leave the hustle of the city behind for the open freedom of the North. Spend the day riding around the green province of Nan, experiencing great routes with little to no traffic and excellent asphalt – almost like having your own private racetrack! For those traveling with partners who do not wish to participate, Nan is a lovely walk-able town with countless ancient Buddhist temples so the day can be used to explore the walled city or simply laze by the hotel pool.
Nan to Chiang Khong
Get ready for the awesome 1148! This legendary road is absolutely unforgettable amongst riders who have experienced it. 100km of low-traffic twisties, with a generally superb surface. As this road is so special, to cater to the differing riding styles and speeds, you will be free to go at your own pace and we will regroup along the way at a drink stop.
After devouring the 1148 we’ll head north through the national park of Phu Chi Fah, stopping for lunch along the way at a beautiful waterfall. This area is all about one thing – ridgeline riding and spectacular scenery! Tonight’s stop at Chiang Khong will leave you relaxed and satisfied, right on the majestic Mekhong River.
Chiang Khong to Chiang Rai
We leave Chiang Khong with the Mekong River on our shoulder. The feeling of riding next to this fabled river is something special. After a coffee stop at a viewpoint we'll make our way to the official Golden Triangle – where the three countries of Myanmar (Burma), Laos and Thailand meet. Here we’ll visit the infamous Opium Museum to get feel for the history of the area then swap the bikes for a boat and take a short cruise on the river.
Mounting up again, heading west to the border town of Mae Sai for lunch where it’s optional to cross into Myanmar for a look around the market there which is full of dodgy knockoff phones, sunglasses e.t.c. We’ll be there less than an hour so if some of the party don’t fancy the trip, they can stay at a restaurant on the Thai side or simply stroll around the town. After our border hop, it’s a straight 60km blast down the highway to the first of our two nights in Chiang Rai.
Chiang Rai
Let’s have a bit of culture shall we? Today we'll be exploring the northern most province of Thailand: Chiang Rai. Get ready for temples, asphalt, dirt and soul. Those not wishing to participate are free to explore Chiang Rai or simply laze by the pool.
Chiang Rai to Fang
Leaving Chiang Rai, we'll turn into the countryside and head to a spectacular tea plantation. Today you will experience probably the most technical riding but you'll be handsomely rewarded with picturesque routes and incredible views. Lisu hill tribe kids can be sometimes seen playing in full tribal costume and you'll love the lunch at a tiny village populated by Kuo Ming Tang refugees. Originally Chinese soldiers who were forced to flee Mao Tse ung’s communist China in the early 1950s, they settled just over the border in Thailand, on the fringes of a little lake. Forward 21st century their beautiful village has become a hotspot for photographers and tourists alike.
After lunch we’ll hop on a long-tail boat to visit a remote Karen Long Neck village, deep in a bamboo forest. After sampling one of the areas most spectacular temples we'll ascend into the back hills for a ride close to the Burmese border, complete with army checkpoints before holing up for the night in Fang.
Fang to Chiang Mai
Our last day sees us once again devouring deserted roads while heading up to the Royal Project area of Doi Ang Khang. Leaving the mountains behind us, we aim to be back in Chiang Mai, tired but happy for drinks by 4pm.
Congratulations, you have mastered a thousand bends!
